Leaving vehicles in the National Park for 4 days isn’t recommended due to limited parking and unassured safety of your vehicle. Some better options include:
Mullumbimby is the best place to start and finish the walk as it’s the closest point to the start and the finish of the walk. You have a few options
You can park at Mantra and Peppers at Salt. They also have a great accommodation, massage, food deal. See below
Byron Bay is not the best place to leave your car for 3 nights, if you have a car, it would be better to drive to Mullumbimby and park there.
If you need to park in Byron the best option is Bayshore Drive, near the Solar Train Station.
Please note we do not take any responsibility for the safety of your vehicle.
The Gidjuum Gulganyi Walk has been designed as a 4 day, 3 night hike. Some people are opting to do it in 3 days and 2 nights. We don't recommend this but if you do, the shuttle bus service is designed around people doing it in 4 days not 3. We have two shuttles departing the Minyon Falls area, one at 11:30, another at 15:00.
The Gidjuum Gulganyi Walk officially ends at Minyon Falls which is 6kms from Campsite 3, about 1-2 hours walk. We reckon the nicest way to finish the walk is with the Minyon Loop to Minyon Grass, which is an extra 6 kms which will add an extra 2-3 hours, depending on how fast you walk (it is hillier than the 6km to Minyon Falls). So, if you add the extra 6 km to Minyon Grass, it could mean your walk on day 4 is 3-5 hours depending on how fast you walk. You will need to be at Minyon Grass by 11:35am or 15:05. This means depending on how fast you walk, you’ll need to leave Camp 3 by 6:30am -8:00am to make the 11:35 shuttle or by 9:00 to catch the 15:05 shuttle. If on the day you change your mind for your pickup place, just call Wendy 0405275743 and let her know.
We will send you a reminder email the day before your journey to confirm the pickup time and location. Our vehicles will have a photo of some hikers on the side. Contact Wendy 0405275743, if you have any last minute changes or pick up queries.
Please be prepared for the weather, this is the Northern Rivers and we get over 2000mm of rain a year. It is your responsibility to check the weather forecast before you depart and ensure you have appropriate wet, windy, cold, hot weather gear depending on the conditions. When it is wet there is a chance the leeches will be present. We suggest you spray your boots and lower legs with tropical strength insect repellent. This should help keep them from bothering you, too much.
Depending on your carrier, you may not have much signal on day one, but should have some signal on day two, three and four.
When you book you will receive a link to a liability waiver and emergency information form. The National Parks have asked us to get you to fill these out. Its not mandatory. But if there is there is an emergency we will have all the right information to help you. We've had a few incidents where we've been able to help people who are in trouble. If you don't sign the form you are telling us, that you don't want our help. You will need to solely rely on the National Parks and emergency services.
We are currently setting up some Personal Locator Beacons and Garmin Inreaches to hire out to people on the walk.
On the Gidjuum Gulganyi Walk you’ll be serenaded by Albert’s Lyrebirds mimicking half the forest, dazzled by Regent Bowerbirds flashing their bling, and scolded by glossy black cockatoos, yellow tailed cockatoos and sulphur-crested cockatoos who think they own the place.Sooty Owls, tawny frogmouths, king parrots, scrub wrens, crimson rosellas, and even the occasional koala might pop by to check out your hiking technique. Down on the forest floor, pademelons will hop across your path, and yes—snakes and leeches are part of the package (welcome to the real Australia!). At Campsite2, some cheeky bush rats have been gnawing their way through unattended snacks—and tents—to score a free feed. Seal up your food unless you want a rodent review of your trail mix!
There are several places to swim on your walk. They do depend on how much rain has fallen. If you plan on having a wash at one of the swimming holes, please use biodegradable soaps. Always follow Leave No Trace principles: use soaps sparingly, wash about 50m away from water, and disperse wastewater in soil, as even biodegradable soaps affect water chemistry and aquatic life.
Day one has Unicorn Falls, but as this is only 30 minutes into you walk, its a lovely place to see, but unless you're super keen, maybe leave your swim for Hells Hole, which is about 1km from Camp 1. Hells Hole isn't well signed, but you can access turning right after the wooden bridge on Sand Ridge Road and following the creek to swimming hole.
Day two has no swimming holes. Day three, if there is has been a bit of rain their is a creek near camp 3.
Day four, there are plenty of opportunities for a dip - depending on how much rain we've had. You can have a dip in boggy creek, on you way to Minyon Falls. If you're not going on to Minyon Grass, you can have a dip, at top of the falls, near the stepping stones. If you're going on to Minyon Grass, you can have a dip at the bottom of Minyon Falls.
Mullumbimby is a great little town – the Biggest Little Town in Australia. That is the closest centre to both the start and the end of the walk. 30 Minutes from Manns Rd and Unicorn Falls and 30minutes from Minyon Falls. They have hotel and motel accommodation plus camping options at both the showground and the Mullum Giants Rugby League Oval. Their camping store is located on Burringbar St. After your walk, you might appreciate a $20 pub meal at the Middle Pub.
